Iditarod Trail Roadhouse main facility was built in 1953. It was formerly a US Post Office after the city moved to this side of the river in the 1930s. Over time the building served as a trading post along the trail on the way to Nome.
Nowadays the Roadhouse accommodates adventurous travelers from all around the world in a comfortable, affordable place and operates as a logistics outpost for the Iditarod Sled Dog Race.
