Yes, Takotna has tourism activities. During our backcountry trip we head from McGrath to Takotna following the Iditarod Trail, explore the fascinating village and fly back to McGrath.
After an early breakfast and short safety briefing at the Roadhouse, we head from McGrath to Takotna following the trail. On the way we take the time to observe and understand the wildlife. We have great chances to see moose and calf, white hare, wolf tracks and meet inter-village snow machiners making the trip between the two villages.
After a break at a nice viewpoint, we arrive at the village in the late afternoon. We spend our first night at the community lodge of Takotna.
In the morning we follow the large gravel road that leads to Ophir. The journey offers various scenic views over the valley. Once we reach the pass, we start our long descent back to Takotna. Afterward we spend the rest of the day visiting the nice village through colorful houses and surrounding curiosities. In addition, the most curious – and courageous – of us can reach the bridge in Takotna or one of the airstrips. Spending an entire day around Takotna is the perfect opportunity to meet with local residents and taste true Alaskan hospitality.
On the third morning we leave Takotna via the airport. We fly back to McGrath in a small plane and enjoy the epic scenic views offered during the flight.
